Sing Sing Theater is a fantastical bar-cum-club with the most creative interior design concept in Bangkok. Paying homage to far Eastern aesthetics, you can expect intricate wrought iron patterns, hundreds of lanterns hanging from the ceiling and plenty of dragon imagery to go with the ‘Muses’ (elegant girls dressed in Chinese Qipao).
There is a big push into concept parties at Sing Sing too, with themes like Underwater or Carnival being completely immersive experiences and a whole lot of fun. Sing Sing Theater was developed by a partnership including Oskar Bistro and Quince Restaurant, but it reminds us a lot of Maggie Choo’s over in Silom. It comes as no surprise that it is the same designer and art director behind both venues, and, in particular, the work of Ashley Sutton as the designer strikes a chord as his concepts have been a hit all over town. This – his most ambitious work – has established Sing Sing as one of the hottest clubs in Bangkok.
The club itself is split into two downstairs bars, a central dancefloor which doubles as a stage for performances, and a balcony hanging over the dancefloor, a prime spot for checking out the action down below. Loosely modelled on a Chinese brothel, symmetrical elements follow principles of feng shui with walkways flowing into hidden seating areas and vantage spots. The music at Sing Sing Theater covers a lot of ground, and is far more ambitious than most clubs in the capital.
Here you will find critically acclaimed international acts such as Gilles Peterson, French deep house artist Kilngande and, holding a weekly residency, Jul&Co, house DJs who play live percussion and beatbox, combining live performance with electronic dance music. A more downtempo live act is usually playing between 20:00 to 22:00 which is perfect for the after dinner crowd. Dance performances are also common, featuring anything from burlesque routines to freaky girls in gas masks.
It’s fair to say this venue is catering to a more mature crowd than you will likely find in other Bangkok clubs, with a cocktail menu to match.
Premium liquors and creative signature concoctions are the order of the day but don’t expect much change from 500 baht. A bottle of beer starts from 180 baht. Sing Sing Theater is located on Soi 45 Sukhumvit Road, next door to the ever-popular Quince restaurant Bangkok. It is half way between Phrom Phong and Thonglo BTS Skytrain stations.
It opens around 20:00 although it is popular with an after dinner crowd on weeknights from around 22:00 (closed on Mondays), with more raucous scenes on weekends. Sing Sing definitely straddles the line between nightclub and bar, with a clear impetus on cultural performances and bringing in the cream of international talent at least once a month. It’s the type of place you can turn up to socialise, dance or a bit of both – and that’s why it’s such a popular party venue in Bangkok right now.
