Red Sky is a fancy rooftop bar and restaurant in Bangkok. While it doesn’t offer striking riverside or treetop views that other rooftop bars enjoy, it has pretty impressive 360-degree panoramic vistas from its 55th floor, one of the most convenient locations in town. If you visit Bangkok, chances are you will end up shopping in the Siam area, where the largest and most trendy shopping malls are located, such as the legendary Siam Paragon, MBK and the newly rebuilt CentralWorld.
Red Sky bar is part of the Centara Grand Hotel, which itself is actually part of this gigantic Central World shopping mall. So it seems to be a perfect combination: shop till your credit card drops, then recover from walking miles and miles with a dinner or a glass of chilled wine with unforgettable views from the rooftop above the shopping mall itself.
The lift leading to Red Sky is located a bit outside the shopping mall. You will have to turn your back to the BTS Skytrain track and walk all the way to the end of CentralWorld where the elevator will take you in no time to the 55th floor. Very friendly staff will take you to a table if you choose to dine or to one of the comfortable sofas distributed around the circular tower.
Here, there’s no rush; take your time and enjoy the moment with an excellent Jazz quartet who understand what ‘background music’ really means. Of course there should be no need to tell you that with a circular tower, there are only few sofas actually facing the sunset, so if you really want to get the best seat, come a bit early. From up here you can see quite far, weather permitting. You can also peek inside the new extra-luxurious Kempinski Hotel next door and even get a bird’s eye view of the large royal residence next to it (mostly a sea of huge trees).
If you know Bangkok a bit, trying to identify buildings and spotting landmarks seen from the top is an irrestitible game, look for the beautiful Wat Saket… or try to spot MBK Siam Discovery… it’s harder than it seems. The only tower challenging the heights of Centara Grand is the famous Bayoke Sky Tower and its 65th-floor revolving observatory. And you can bet that people over there are staring right back at you.
