Chiang Rai’s Waterfalls

Chiang Rai has a number of beautiful waterfalls to visit, most of which are off the tourist trail. All are easy to get to from the town centre and will give you an experience to remember for ever. Details of the waterfalls and directions are given below:

Huai Kaew waterfall
 is located in Pha Soet village, Doi Hang. It is 6.5 km away from Huai Mak Lium Hot Spring and 25 kms from the city of Chiang Rai. It’s new for tourists, so not many people know about it, with water flow all year round and it is a nice place that surrounded with thick woods. It is a 2 levels waterfall. The 1st level is 30 m. high and tourists can swim in the pond under waterfall, 2nd level is 200 m. away from 1st level. This level is 40 m. high.

How to get there: From the city tourists can take the same way to go to Huai Mak Lium Hot Spring and turn left at Wat Phasoet Wanaram. It would be a good idea for tourists to drive 4×4 to the waterfall.

Huai Mae Sai Waterfall is a part of Mae Kok National Park that is located in Huai Mae Sai village, M. 10 Mae Yao Sub-District and 19 km away from the city of Chiang Rai. The way to go to the waterfall is quite rough so most tourists ride elephants from Karen Ruammitr Village or drive 4×4 instead of driving cars. Huai Mae Sai waterfall is a 2 levels waterfall, the first level is 15 m. high and 100 m. away from another level. The first level is covered with moss and fern when the second level has a pond where tourists can swim.

Khun Jae Waterfall is a large waterfall that is located in Pang Phung village, Mae Chedi of Wiang Pa Pao District. It is a part of Khun Jae National Park that is surrounded with thick woods. 100 – 200 m. is the distance that tourists can walk to another level of Khun Jae Waterfall. Khun Jae Waterfall has 6 levels, 10 – 20 m. is the average high of the waterfall. Water in a pond below the waterfall is clear and it is a nice place that is suitable for recreation.

Nam Tok Khun Kon or Tat Mok Waterfall is located in Nam Tok Khun Kon Forest Park and has high 70-metres which it is the highest waterfall and most beautiful in the province. Along the route to the site are cool, shady natural surroundings suitable for relaxation and nature walks.

How to get there: Nam Tok Khun Kon Forest Park can be reached by taking Highway No.1211 from the town. After 18 kilometres turn right and proceed on for another 12 kilometres. Or go along Highway No. 1 (Chiang Rai-Phayao) for about 15 kilometres where there is a right turn to proceed further another 17 kilometres, then a 30-minute walk to the waterfall.

Opening Hours Daily from 08:00 am. – 05:00 pm.

Maetow Waterfalls have seven levels, the highest of which are about 40 meters, the lowest, though just a few meters high, are lovely and have water during the dry season. From the park headquarters, the trailhead to Maetow Waterfalls is approximately 30-40 minutes by vehicle. From the trailhead, all seven levels of the falls can be reached in approximately two hours.

Pha Gled Naga Waterfall was originated in Dry Evergreen Forest, located 4 km. far from Tom Village. It can be accessed only by walking in. Its natural beauty is the rocks shaped like the scale of naga glittering when they reflect in the sun light.

Phu Sang Waterfall a 25 m. high warm waterfall where tourists can swim. An average temperature of water is about 35 c., but no smell of sulfur so, everybody can swim safely. In winter this place is covered by fog. Food and beverages are available at the park all year round.

Poo Kaeng Waterfall just 14 kilometres from Chiang Rai, this extremely beautiful waterfall is situated in an area of natural beauty. The route to the waterfall takes you through a lush forest, and the falls are surrounded by trees and the sounds of birds calling. Unlike many of the other waterfalls in the area, these falls do not receive too many visitors, so you can relax, swim and picnic near the falls without being disturbed.

Poo Kaeng Waterfall is the site of Doi Luang National Park’s headquarters located in Phan district. To reach it, go on the Chiang Rai-Phayao route for 58 kilometres to arrive at Bang Pu Kaeng. At Km. 77, take amid virgin jungle with water cascading down limestone brooks. There are camping area and jungle trekking services.

Tad Kwan Waterfall is located in the area of Baan Mae Tham Narm Thock, M.6 This is a Waterfall about 25 meters high. . The area is surrounded by trees. It is 70 km. fromThe city of Chiangrai on the highway 1152 then turn on to Phaya Mengrai-Chiang Khong. Once you get to the entrance, you may need to walk another 600 meters to the waterfall.

Tak Mork Waterfall was the ex-name of Khun Korn Waterfall Forest Park, it has many mountains surround This park. It will take around 30 minutes (33 Km.) from the central of Chiangrai to get there. When you arrive you will feel fresh immediately because Khun Koan Waterfall forest Park is the perfect nature park. Khun korn waterfall is the tallest fall in Chiang Rai, 70 metres tall.

Besides this park it the ”Butterflies fall” and “Hoay Lao Ai Fall”. Both are beautiful falls, including have many kinds of plant like ferns.Wild Orchids ect., have been along the way. You will here the voice of insects and birds.They make you feel good. In this park, it has the visitor centre and trekking for learning about the nature like a big classroom that has many things to learn. However, along the way to Khun Korn-Waterfall Forest Park still has wide space for camping and it has many shops for service the tourists until the sun set.
