Glow Nightclub in Bangkok is a party venue with a strictly underground dance music policy that is constantly rocking to bass-heavy beats. Anyone wanting the most cutting-edge house music in the city should seek out this dark, loud, diminutive club. Bangkok is rightly regarded as one of the world’s most vibrant party metropolises with world-class parties, clubs and events taking place on a nightly basis – but Glow offers something a little bit different: a place where your love of music is more important than the label on your back.
Although you would struggle to find it in the daytime, tucked away on a side street off Sukhumvit Soi 23, Glow is easy to recognise at night thanks to the radiating neon-green light scheme that gives the club its name. Drive past Soi Cowboy (on your left), take the first right and then first left. Glow is ten metres down on your left hand side.
Entry prices vary depending on the event and the DJ, but on weekends expect to pay up to 300baht with one free drink. The box-like layout of the club might feel a little limited to some, but it has the positive effect of bringing everyone together on the dance floor from early on in the night. For those that want to chill out there is a row of cushioned seating running parallel to the bar, but don’t expect to be sitting for long when even the bar staff can’t stop themselves swaying to the beat. There’s also an upstairs area with more seating and a balcony for viewing the mass of bodies on the dance floor.
The décor is dimly-lit with glowing neon greens and pinks, which adds a futuristic vibe that is enhanced by whirling disco lights.
The club events and DJs vary from week to week but there is a definite emphasis on the quality of the music and the musicianship of the DJs. The club features a lot of European artists playing anything from classic Detroit-style house to techno, and occasionally even drum’n’bass.
This is not a place to come to show-off or be seen; this is a place to come with your dance shoes on and a smile on your face. House-music lovers who grow tired of the somewhat predictable – but more accessable – music policy of clubs on Soi 11 or Thong Lor will rejoice in Glow’s music policy that doesn’t pander to what is popular in the charts because, in a city of endless parties, the underground house and trance scene is fairly underrepresented.
