Seven Spoons Restaurant

In a cosy double shop house on a quiet road that visitors don’t really frequent you will find one of the best restaurants in Bangkok. Seven Spoons is so popular that it’s recently expanded, but still has the warm atmosphere and large portions of Mediterranean and vegetarian food regulars are familiar with and first-timers will be excited by. It now opens for lunch and offers sandwiches alongside its hearty mains. The reason behind its expansion is simple.

With delicious food and strong cocktails, Seven Spoons is a rare find in the city, a restaurant with real passion behind it and prices so low that you will be doing a double-take when they bring you the bill. Seven Spoons is almost too good to share, and despite its popularity it still feels like a fantastic secret.

It is partly the location that makes Seven Spoons feel so hidden. Located five minutes’ walk from the junction of Chakkrapatipong Road and Lan Luang Road, you’ll need to take a taxi if you are staying in central Bangkok. Cabs will know Lan Luang, but bear in mind traffic can be pretty bad in the early evening, so leave plenty of time to get there.

The restaurant has double-height ceilings and a retro bar with with glitzy mirror hanging behind the line of bottles. The extra space means more people can enjoy the restaurant, but you still feel comfortable and cosy here. There are plenty of friendly staff too, so you will be well looked after during your dinner.

The menu at Seven Spoons is a variety of Mediterranean and vegetarian dishes, but there are great choices for meat lovers too. Because ingredients are sourced according to seasons and with a focus on local produce, there may unfortunately be some dishes that are unavailable. This is the only disappointment of our evening, but given that our second choice dishes are so fantastic, we quickly forget about it.

To start, we pick two appetisers and a salad. The mushroom fritti with a masala dipping sauce (120 baht) is the perfect accompaniment to our drinks, a splash of lime and a sprinkle of salt give a zing to the earthy mushrooms and proves (to me at least) that most things taste better deep fried. The quesadilla is pure comfort food, filled with chicken and cheddar cheese and accompanied by one of the best fresh tomato salsas we have ever tried.

The lunch menu is slightly lighter, but you still get a decent portion. We ordered four dishes between two and it was slightly too much. The salads were a higlight, including the cauliflower, chicken and olive salad with a creamy mustard dressing (160 baht) and the falafel salad with tzazkiki and aubergine (180baht). Vegetarians will love the lentil pie with sour cream (160 baht). I’ve been back to Seven Spoons several times It is such a charming little place and deserves the extra effort to travel to this special part of Bangkok and discover. This is the kind of food that you will be talking about for weeks afterwards: comforting, full of flavour and extremely moreish.
